Day II
Pulse & Tongue Evaluation

Registration, tea/coffee 9:30am

10:00am-5:00pm:

Pulse & Tongue Evaluation (workshop part II)

This class is designed for practitioners of Western herbalism, though it can be utilized by practitioners of Chinese herbalism and medicine as well.

An hour or two on Southern Blood Medicine (high/low, thick/thin, fast/slow, good/bad, hot/cold), which gives insight into the slow changes of aging and supplements Traditional Chinese Medicine very well.

Throughout we will refer to specific indications for herbs, Western and Eastern, so this will be, as our classes always are, on herbalism as well as diagnosis.

After a quick review of introductory material and questions, we will plunge into hands on and open-eyed examination of pulses and tongues. We not only want to learn how to understand basic pulse qualities and tongue meanings, but to increase confidence with energetic analysis – hot and cold, yin and yang, vata, pitta, kapha.

Then, we want to link the signs we find with specific categories of herbs (moistening for dry, relaxing for tension, etc.) and even specific herbs. The method I teach is fairly exact, with specific indications for herbs, as taught in “specific medicine” (John Scudder, 19th century USA) and Huang Huang (Ten Formula Families in Chinese Herbalism).

Day III
Pulse & Tongue Evaluation

Registration, tea/coffee 9:30am

10:00am-5:00pm:

Pulse & Tongue Evaluation (workshop part III)

Pulse

Our pulse evaluation methods are based on both Chinese and Greek medicine, with the emphasis on basic, simple, important pulses.  Although the two systems overlap a great deal, it is also interesting to observe the differences.

The Chinese long pulse extends down the arm past the pulse position (meaning well nourished, strong) while the Greek is long in the apex (large heart capacity).

The Chinese short pulse is shortened in overall length (poor peripheral circulation) while the Greek is short in the apex (small heart capacity, found before a heart attack).

It is easiest to learn the pulses in pairs (high/low, fast/slow, wiry/relaxed, tight/loose, strong/weak).  One of the gems of the Greek system is the alignment of pulses with increasing levels of hear:

(1) degree, pulse high or large, indicating overheating on a hot summer day, strong constitution but tendency to weight gain through overeating;

(2) degree, pulse rapid, fever;

(3) degree, pulse "quick" (a Greek pulse; no space between the beats) indicating mental stress, restlessness, obsessive thinking, heat agitating the mind (or "vapors" in Greek system). Cold: (1) degree, pulse "rare" (space between the beats; similar to the leisurely pulse of TCM), athletic tone, meditative mind, senility, slightly sensitive to cold; (2) degree, pulse slow, cold or thickened humors blocking transit of water and heat; (3) degree, pulse low, indicates low internal heat, fire dying down, weak peripheral circulation.  Pulses are fun and it is fun to learn new stuff from different traditions.

Tongue

Our tongue evaluation is based on Chinese medicine, with two important additions from Ayurveda: differentiation of tongue types by tridosha: vata (dry, thin, medium to long), pitta (elongated, pointed, carmine red, muscular), kapha (thick, round, moist, sub-pink); and the differentiation between watery and oily secretions.

We also teach the tissue states: heat/excitation (carmine, red-tipped, flame-shaped tongue), cold/depression (lacking in moisture and color), dry/atrophy (dry, thin, creased or withered), damp/stagnation (thick, yellow, greasy, adhesive coat, usually red tongue body), tension (shakes), relaxation (moist, to white, easily washed off coating).

When we are looking at the tongue we will point out any outstanding facial and complexion indications (lines, dots, colors, moisture).
