The Sun and The Earth -

Unsung Heroes in Modern Healing

Traditional and scientific evidence for the benefits of heliotherapy (sunlight) and earthing (grounding) on human health

with Karen McElroy

Humans have evolved with a highly interdependent relationship to nature – specifically we have adapted to the sun over thousands of years and like most living things in nature, many of our body systems depend on sunlight for their function. Sunlight triggers off a cascade of endocrine, neurological and immune reactions crucial for optimal body function, far beyond simple vitamin D synthesis.

Likewise, humans have lived with a deep reliance and respect for the earth and nature which has influenced us in diverse psychosocial and physiological ways. Modern life however, has brought with it a major disconnection from our natural heritage with everything from artificial light to synthetic man-made products dominating our lives and bringing with it negative consequences on our mental, physical and emotional health. This presentation will look at the physiological and psychological need for sunlight exposure, nature connection, and earthing on human health. An overview of modern research will also be covered, demonstrating important beneficial effects from these often under-utilised natural healing modalities – including impacts on pain, inflammation, hormone regulation, immunity, mood, sleep and energy.
